Clevedon Commemorates VJ Day with Wartime Celebration.

Saturday 16th August, Clevedon Queen Square (the site of the former railway station where people will have left to go to war)
Clevedon will step back in time on Saturday 16th August to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day (Victory over Japan), bringing the town together in a heartfelt and nostalgic celebration of the end of World War II.

The day begins at 10.00am with a display of wartime vehicles and vintage military equipment, offering a glimpse into life 80 years ago. Visitors will be treated to a medley of 1940s classics to get everyone ‘In the Mood’ as the streets fill with music and memory.
At 10.45am, the Chair of Clevedon Town Council, Cllr Chris Blades will join the Rev’d Tim Daplyn to offer a moment of reflection for all those who lost their lives during the war — on all sides.

The Chair will then officially open the day’s events at 11.00am.
Live performances will bring the spirit of the 1940s alive:
11.00am: Swing sensation John Prescott will perform a vibrant set inspired by the likes of Sinatra, Nat King Cole. John Prescott Vocalist

12.00pm: Phoebe Richards will take the stage with a beautiful selection of wartime favourites.

2.00pm: Songbird Phoebe returns to the stage.

Clevedon town council will host a special pensioners’ picnic at 1.00pm, offering a reflective space for older residents to share stories from their youth and commemorate the wartime generation. This is fully booked.

Visitors can also explore a fascinating range of displays throughout the day, including:

An authentic Anderson Shelter
A vintage steam engine
Classic tractors
Wartime vehicles
And much more for the whole family to enjoy

The event concludes at 4.00pm, best 40’s dressed competition for all of those who have made the effort to dress up in the period.

This moving and memorable day of remembrance and celebration is proudly organised by Clevedon Town Council with the Shopland collection. All are welcome to attend and honour the resilience, sacrifice, and community spirit of a remarkable generation.
