VJ Day, commemorated on Saturday, 16 August: Queens Square.
On Saturday 16th August 2025, Clevedon Town Council, in partnership with the Clevedon Shopland Collection, hosted a heartfelt community event to commemorate Victory over Japan (VJ) Day, marking the end of the Second World War and the beginning of long-awaited peace.
The Triangle was transformed with wartime vehicles and artefacts, creating a living history display that captured the spirit, resilience, and gratitude of the era. With live entertainment, classic songs, room to dance, and time to talk, the event brought people together in remembrance, reflection, and community joy. There was a traditional pensioners’ street lunch, spaces to pause and give thanks, and a warm welcome for all generations who came dressed in 1940s style. Flags were waved, voices sang, and dancing shoes were put to good use. It truly was a day for everyone.
Chris Blades (Chair) said, I would like to thank all of the volunteers who made Saturday’s commemoration such a wonderful event.
Without the dogged tenacity of Councillor Shopland, requesting help from the Council to put on this event, it would not have happened.
The events in the Triangle and the sandwiches and cream tea, held in the YMCA, were a credit to Clevedon council and to Clevedon itself.
I would especially like to thank all of the staff at Clevedon council for pulling together and making so many people so happy for one day.
