VJ Day, commemorated on Saturday, 16 August: Queens Square.

On Saturday 16th August 2025, Clevedon Town Council, in partnership with the Clevedon Shopland Collection, hosted a heartfelt community event to commemorate Victory over Japan (VJ) Day, marking the end of the Second World War and the beginning of long-awaited peace.

The Triangle was transformed with wartime vehicles and artefacts, creating a living history display that captured the spirit, resilience, and gratitude of the era. With live entertainment, classic songs, room to dance, and time to talk, the event brought people together in remembrance, reflection, and community joy. There was a traditional pensioners’ street lunch, spaces to pause and give thanks, and a warm welcome for all generations who came dressed in 1940s style. Flags were waved, voices sang, and dancing shoes were put to good use. It truly was a day for everyone.

Chris Blades (Chair) said,  I would like to thank all of the volunteers who made Saturday’s commemoration such a wonderful event.
Without the dogged tenacity of Councillor Shopland, requesting help from the Council to put on this event, it would not have happened.
The events in the Triangle and the sandwiches and cream tea, held in the YMCA, were a credit to Clevedon council and to Clevedon itself.
I would especially like to thank all of the staff at Clevedon council for pulling together and making so many people so happy for one day.

Poet's Walk steps

Improvements to the zigzag path Clevedon

We have been informed by North Somerset Council that the steps on part of the zig-zag path also known as Poet’s Walk in Clevedon are currently in poor condition. The surface is breaking up in several areas, many of the red brick edges are failing, and a section of loose handrail poses a safety concern.

Improvement works are proposed for August/September. This will involve a temporary closure of the path for approximately one week to ensure the works can be completed safely and effectively.

North Somerset Council thanks residents for their understanding and cooperation during this time. Further information is available from the Public Rights of Way team

James MacQueen

New Councillor Joins Clevedon Town Council – Plus an Opportunity to Represent Your Community

Clevedon Town Council is delighted to welcome a new face to the chamber. James MacQueen joins the council bringing with him deep community roots, and a strong commitment to representing local residents.

Born and raised in North Somerset, James has spent much of his adult life actively involved in local campaigns. A dedicated Conservative campaigner, he is known for his energy, commitment, and the personal touch he brings to community work. His decision to step into the role of town councillor reflects his ongoing dedication to making a difference in the place he calls home.

James’s passion for improving opportunities for people with Specific Learning Difficulties comes from his own life experience. Living with dyslexia, he understands first-hand the barriers people can face in education and employment and the transformative effect that the right support can have.

“I know what it’s like to feel overlooked or to have to work twice as hard to achieve your goals,” James said. “That’s why I am determined to ensure everyone in our community gets a fair deal and access to the resources they need. Whether it’s in education, local services, or opportunities for personal development, people deserve the chance to thrive.”

Over his years in politics, James has developed a deep understanding of how both local and national government work. This insight gives him a unique advantage when it comes to navigating processes, advocating for change, and ensuring Clevedon residents’ voices are heard in the right places. His experience means he knows how to connect community needs with the decision-makers who can make things happen.

James is also keen to build on the work of the council in supporting Clevedon’s economy, protecting the town’s unique character, and improving quality of life for all residents. “Clevedon is a special place, it’s got a strong sense of identity and community spirit. I want to make sure we protect what’s best about our town while also making it a place where people of all ages can find opportunities and support.”

Vacancy for South Ward – Could You Be Our Next Councillor?

Alongside welcoming James, Clevedon Town Council currently has a vacancy for a councillor in South Ward. This is a fantastic opportunity for a local resident to make a real difference in their community.

Being a town councillor is a voluntary role, but it comes with the reward of having a direct say in the decisions that shape Clevedon’s future. Councillors work together to influence everything from local amenities and community projects to planning responses and environmental initiatives.

You don’t need previous political experience to apply – in fact, many councillors come from completely different backgrounds. What matters most is a passion for your community, a willingness to listen to residents, and the ability to work collaboratively to find solutions.

As a councillor, you’ll:

Represent your neighbours and bring their concerns to council meetings.

Help decide how the council’s budget is spent.

Contribute to shaping policies and projects that affect Clevedon.

Work with local groups, charities, and organisations to strengthen community life.

It’s a role that can be as varied as the town itself.

Current councillors often say that the most rewarding part of the job is seeing tangible changes in the town.

If you’ve ever thought “someone should do something about that” perhaps that someone could be you. By stepping up, you can make sure local voices are heard and help shape Clevedon for future generations.
