Sustainable Clevedon – Events

The events below are from Sustainable Clevedon

Wassailing – this Saturday, 11th January 2.30 till 4pm in the Community Orchard next to Baytree School in Brookside Walk. Just follow the path to the right of the school. This is always great fun and is a centuries-old custom of celebrating the previous harvest and warding off bad spirits in orchards and fruit trees. Please bring a pan and something to bang it with as we process around the trees to wake them up. Wellies are always a good idea! There will be cider, mulled cider and apple cake.

Energy Stall – Thursdays 16th and 23rd January between 9.30 and 12.30 at the market in Queen’s Square. This is a continuation of our energy project which started with the Green Open Homes and is funded by the Centre for Sustainable Energy.. At the stall we will have information about ways to insulate and draft proof homes. There will be draft proofing products to give away and information leaflets available. We need volunteers to help us on the stall, please let us know if you could be available.

Green Drinks – on Tuesday 21st January at 7.30 at the Old Inn, Walton Road. There won’t be a speaker but it’ll be an opportunity to discuss our plans for the coming year including the festival in March.

Clevedon Town Council Responds to Concerns About Christmas Lights

Clevedon Town Council acknowledges the feedback from businesses and residents regarding the Christmas lights display in the town centre. While we share the disappointment over the current situation, we want to provide clarity and context about the challenges we have faced this year.

The Christmas lights we currently have are old and have struggled to withstand the severe weather conditions we’ve experienced recently. Due to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, we had hoped that the lights would last another year, but unfortunately this approach has proven unsustainable.

Looking ahead, Clevedon Town Council is committed to improving the festive experience for everyone in our town. In 2025, we look forward to better communication and collaboration with all stakeholders to ensure a cohesive and inclusive approach to Christmas lighting and events. To support these efforts, we have recently welcomed a Communications Manager to our team, who will work closely with our officers and the community to streamline these processes.

We want to express our gratitude to local businesses, residents, and visitors for their understanding.

In the meantime, we wish everyone in Clevedon a wonderful and joyful Christmas season.

North Somerset Council – Zig Zag steps

Over the past few years North Somerset Council have responded to reports of poor surface and access along Zig Zag steps and the various fixes have failed shortly after. Therefore as a public footpath that is frequently used we are planning to completely resurface the path and reset the handrails to make the route safe and usable for the future. We will have to close the path whilst we do this and direct the public around the path, fortunately this is not far.

The works are likely to taken place early next year and I will inform you when I have dates.

Christmas paper

From North Somerset Council – Recycling & waste collections over the festive period

Collection date changes
Recycling & waste collections over the festive period will change as crews are not working Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. Please note that collections will take place on Sunday 29 December to help with the catch up.

All collections will return to normal from Monday 6 January. Collection dates can be checked here: www.n-somerset.gov.uk/calendars and I have attached a pdf of the collection dates poster for you. We’d be very grateful if you could print and include on notice boards, upload onto your webpages and publicise across your area wherever you can think of.

No wrapping paper in recycling
No wrapping paper of any kind can be put out for recycling this year. Wrapping paper is difficult to recycle because there are so many varieties and most are mixed with unrecyclable items such as foil, glitter, ribbon, and tape. Instead please put wrapping paper in the black non-recyclable waste bin. There are lots of eco-friendly alternatives to wrapping paper including brown paper which can be decorated with stamps – this can be recycled with cardboard if the tape is removed.

Recycling
We have already begun to see a rise in cardboard tonnages. To help crews manage this, we ask residents to ensure all cardboard has the tape removed and is presented flattened and folded to the size of a recycling box. We also ask residents to store what they can and put out a little each week if they have excess. This helps crews complete their rounds and collect from each property.

Additional crews will be helping with collections over the festive period to manage the increase in recycling. Last year we saw a 30% increase compared to an average week of collections. Some collections of individual materials such as cardboard or glass may be done using different vehicles and at different times.

Food Waste
Christmas is also a period of high food waste. Advice on reducing food waste and some fantastic Christmas recipes can be found at: www.lovefoodhatewaste.com A reminder that food waste for recycling should be wrapped or bagged. Any plastic bag will do, residents do not need to purchase special compostable liners any longer.

Real Christmas Trees
After the festive season residents there will be lots of opportunities for residents to recycle or repurpose their real Christmas tree. Those with a garden waste subscription can place their tree out, minus pot and decorations on their January collection date next to their garden waste bin. Look out for more information coming soon for charity organised collections and drop offs. Last year £31,240 was made for local charities through the tree-cycling schemes.
